Scholiast ("the App") provides voice translation, text translation, and AI-powered travel assistance services. This Privacy Policy explains what data the App collects, how that data is used, and with whom it is shared.

Scholiast uses artificial intelligence services provided by OpenAI (OpenAI, L.L.C.) to power its core features. The following data is transmitted to OpenAI for processing:
When you record audio for translation, your audio recording is sent to OpenAI's Whisper speech recognition service for transcription. The audio is processed in real-time and is not permanently stored by OpenAI after transcription is complete.
Transcribed text, along with your selected source and target languages, is sent to OpenAI's GPT language models for translation. The text is processed and not retained by OpenAI after the translation is delivered.
Translated text is sent to OpenAI's text-to-speech service to generate spoken audio in the target language. Your voice gender preference is included. The text is not stored after audio generation.
Questions you ask the AI travel assistant (via voice or text) are sent to OpenAI's GPT models for processing. Your conversation context is included to provide relevant answers. Conversations are not permanently stored by OpenAI.
When you use the menu/sign scanner, captured images are sent to OpenAI's GPT Vision models for text recognition and translation. Images are not stored by OpenAI after processing.
OpenAI's API data usage policy states that data submitted through the API is not used to train OpenAI's models. OpenAI may retain API inputs and outputs for up to 30 days for abuse and misuse monitoring purposes, after which they are deleted. Before any personal data is shared with OpenAI, L.L.C., the App presents a mandatory consent screen titled "Permission Required" that:
Users may revoke their consent at any time through the App settings, which immediately stops all data transmission to OpenAI. The consent screen is presented on first use and cannot be bypassed.
We implement appropriate technical and organizational measures to protect your personal information. All data transmissions between the App and our servers, and between our servers and OpenAI, are encrypted using industry-standard TLS/SSL protocols. However, no method of electronic transmission is 100% secure.
Translation history and saved phrasebook entries are stored locally on your device and in your account on our servers. You can clear your translation history and phrasebook entries at any time from within the App. Audio recordings and images are not retained on our servers after processing is complete. Account data (email, display name, profile picture) is retained until you delete your account.
Subscription purchases are processed through Apple's App Store and managed via RevenueCat. We do not collect or store your payment information (credit card numbers, billing address). RevenueCat receives anonymized subscription status information. For details, see RevenueCat's privacy policy and Apple's privacy policy.

Scholiast is not intended for use by children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we become aware that we have collected data from a child under 13, we will take steps to delete that information.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted within the App and on this page. Your continued use of the App after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
